What Is an Explosion-Proof Junction Box? Selection Criteria
Explosion-proof junction boxes protect cable joints and connection points in hazardous areas. Correct selection is based not only on enclosure size but also on site classification and the certified product configuration.
What does an explosion-proof junction box do?
Electrical connection points can become ignition sources in hazardous areas. An Ex junction box contains terminals, joints and distribution points within an appropriate protection concept and should not be treated as merely a stronger standard box.
Zone and Ex marking must match
The first check is the hazardous-area classification. The certificate scope must match gas Zones such as 1 or 2 and dust Zones such as 21 or 22 as required by the project.
Enclosure material and IP rating
Aluminium, stainless steel and GRP enclosures are selected according to mechanical and chemical conditions. IP rating addresses ingress of water and solids but does not by itself demonstrate explosive-atmosphere suitability.
Cable entries and internal volume
Cable quantity, conductor sizes, terminal requirements and gland sizes should be defined in advance. Unapproved field drilling, glands outside the certified scope or excessive filling can invalidate the intended protection concept.

Providing Zone, gas/dust group, ambient temperature, IP requirement, enclosure material, entry/exit count and terminal needs allows faster and more reliable product selection.
