Difference Between IP Rating and Ex Protection

A high IP rating such as IP65 or IP66 does not automatically make electrical equipment explosion-proof or ATEX-compliant. IP and Ex markings describe different risks and must be checked separately in hazardous-area selection.

01

What does an IP rating mean?

The IP rating describes how well an enclosure resists ingress of solids and water. It is an important environmental-durability criterion for outdoor, dusty or wash-down areas, but it does not explain how ignition risk is controlled in an explosive atmosphere.

02

What does Ex protection mean?

Ex marking shows that equipment has been designed using defined protection principles for potentially explosive atmospheres. Protection type, equipment group, Zone/EPL and temperature class are part of this framework.

03

Why is an IP66 device not enough by itself?

A very well sealed standard IP66 box may still contain electrical ignition sources that have not been made safe for an explosive atmosphere. Therefore “high IP means explosion-proof” is technically incorrect.

04

How should the two be read together?

First determine the hazardous-area requirements: Zone, gas/dust group, protection type and temperature class. Then check IP rating and enclosure material for water, dust, corrosion and outdoor exposure.

05

Specify the two requirements separately

Instead of asking only for an “IP66 explosion-proof product,” state the site classification, required Ex marking, ambient temperature, IP rating and enclosure expectations separately. This leads to more accurate product matching.
